Tours by local guides Canny Lau and Shermone Yan
Shermone timely met up with us and guided us around Hong Kong. We were so happy we had her with us. We only had one day in Hong Kong, and, she was able to show us some of the best of Hong Kong during our short visit. Shermone was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, attentive, sweet, and just perfect. She kept the perfect pace for us and listened to our desires to ensure we spent more time at sights we were most interested. I am still amazed at how much of Hong Kong we were able to see in just one day. If we ever have the pleasure of traveling back to Hong Kong, we would want Shermone to show us so more.
It was comforting that since we picked a private tour, the time of "pick-up" was flexible in case our plane was delayed and that we could change the itinerary on a whim. From the moment we met Shermone, we took a liking to her. She had a charismatic and fun personality while being extremely excited to share her vast knowledge with us. Shermone shared a lot of local secrets with us.
In just one short day, we had the opportunity to admire the impressive skyscrapers, the stunning panoramic views from Victoria Peak, tour the Central District, eat local dishes, walk along part of the world's largest outdoor escalator, explore several outdoor market areas, tour the Man Mo Temple, relax at the peaceful and wonderful Hong Kong Park (that had a free aviary), and then she helped us get to the Ngong Ping.
There aren't enough adjectives to properly describe Shermone and how pleased we were with the tour. We truly fell in love with Hong Kong during our short visit.
Our group of 6 coming off a cruise ship for the day were met by our ever efficient and lovely guide, Canny, who whisked us off on a fantastic tour of Victoria Island. We started with a taxi ride to the Star Ferry, on which Canny spent the short ride pointing out the various iconic buildings on the skyline with a bit of history. We walked to the tram to go up to Victoria peak, but found it very crowded, so Canny took us on a tour of the park to start with. Enchanting bird aviary and lovely park. Onwards to the Shangri-La where they arranged for taxis for us to go to the top of the peak. After being wowed by the views, we took the tram down. Canny gave us each transport cards (like the Oyster Cards in London) so that we didn't need to fish for change each time. We then went to a Chinese temple celebrating Chinese new year, and took a double decker bus to the old part of Hong Kong. We walked through the wholesale dried fish markets and herb markets before going to the Lin Heung Kui restaurant for lunch. We never would have found it on our own, up a rickety set of stairs to a real Hong Kong dim sum restaurant, where we had a fabulous lunch. We are from Vancouver, so we know dim sum. This was the real thing and we were the only Caucasians there. After some more walking through the densely packed old quarter, we were getting tired, so Canny took us up the longest outdoor escalator in the world to SoHo, and then took the MRT back to a shopping center near the cruise ship terminal where we were able to get a taxi to our cruise ship (in plenty of time BTW). This tour is highly recommended. We saw much more than the people who took the ship's tour.
